After significant consideration and consultation on the effects of medicines containing codeine on people’s health and wellbeing, Australia’s medicine’s regulator, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), has decided that products containing codeine will not be able to be sold over the counter in pharmacies, making such products available on prescription only.The decision to re-schedule codeine is consistent with the Australian Government’s commitment to protect public health and safety for all Australians. Codeine is closely related to morphine and, like morphine, is an opioid. Long-term use of low-dose codeine has been linked to opioid dependence, toxicity and abuse.The TGA said misuse of over-the-counter codeine products contributes to severe health outcomes, including "including liver damage, stomach ulceration, respiratory depression and death".TGA has amended all previously Schedule 2 (Pharmacy Only) and Schedule 3 (Pharmacist Only) codeine containing products to Schedule 4 (Prescription Only) to reflect the scheduling decision from 1 February 2018..
